Table of Contents
1. Ask For “No straw” Or Bring A Reusable Straw
500 million plastic straws are used every day in America alone (that is enough to circle the earth – twice). Many of these end up in the ocean, posing a threat to marine life (just watch the sustainable documentary, A Plastic Ocean). By purchasing a reusable straw and carrying it in your purse or bag, it is an easy and simple way to say no to plastic when you are out and about. There are all different types of reusable straws available now, from bamboo to silicone, glass, to stainless steel and more. Our personal favourite is the reusable glass straw as they are easy to clean and look great. Make sure you get a straw cleaner with it so it can stay hygienic while you are travelling.
2. Use A Reusable Water Bottle To Stay Hydrated On The Go
Did you know that one million plastic bottles are bought every minute around the world? Don’t add to the plastic pollution and single use mentality. Reusable bottles come in every shape, form, and size. You can find ones with inbuilt water filters, and ones that can keep your water cold for hours. Our personal favourite is the Hydroflask as it’s double insulated. It keeps our hot drinks hot, and cold drinks cold all day long.
3. Bring A Reusable Compact Bag On Day Trips
These are super handy when you are out and about and need to get a few things from the shops. We use a cotton mesh bag for beach days, hikes and grocery shopping. Check out these alternatives to plastic bags for more ideas and an in-depth look at the current options.
4. Keep A Portable Cutlery Set In Your Bag
We like to travel as cheaply as possible (when we can). We buy oats, cereals, and fruit from local shops instead of dining out for breakfast. A fold-up cutlery kit is small enough to fit into any handbag and is great for eating on the run or on a secluded beach. Bamboo sets also look amazing and are super lightweight.
5. Choose Silicone or Beeswax Wraps
Plastic wrap is overused. It’s hard to watch sometimes. So often when travelling there are instances where you want to save something for later – a sandwich, a muffin or some fruit. Please don’t get it wrapped! We’ve been using beeswax paper for such instances. It’s good, easy to use, easy to clean. Want to make some food for your day trip? Bring it in wax paper, the plants will thank you for it! It’s a great alternative to the plastic bag, and you could even use it as Christmas wrapping paper for your friends (that doubles as an eco friendly gift).
6. Use a Reusable Coffee Cup For Your Takeaway Pick-me-ups
Reusable cups come in all shapes, colours and sizes now. If you are limited in space, Stojo has a collapsible reusable coffee mug. If you want something to keep your coffee hot for a long time, the Hydroflask tumbler is a great option. With more than 2.5 billion takeaway coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK, this is one switch everyone needs to make. With most big coffee chains encouraging discounts for reusable container fills, using a reusable cup could also be better for your bank account.
Make the switch & ditch the single-use plastics!
