Nestled within the Gallery Inn Hotel, the Cannon Club stood out as our absolute favourite bar in Old San Juan. It is a haven for artists and musicians, featuring Steinway pianos poised for play, and regular live music performances. We were lucky enough to see an incredible performance by a Russian pianist while sipping on exceptional cocktails under Venetian chandeliers, making our experience truly unforgettable. The Cannon Club boasts an atmosphere that strikes a rare balance between intimacy and grandeur, and you’ll find yourself in a space that feels both cozy and opulent.
2. La Factoría
La Factoría is one of the most famous and well known bars in Old San Juan, and definitely worth a visit. It has a speakeasy feel – there’s no sign from the outside, and once inside, you’ll find a labyrinth of hidden rooms each with its own vibe. It has topped lists such as the Frommers best bars in the world, and featured in the music video for “Despacito”. We loved our night here, especially the Lavender Mule, Spiced Old Fashioned, and Mercado Roma. To visit, just look for the unmarked entrance on Calle San Sebastián and let the night begin!
3. Deshistoria: Birra & Empanadas
For those in the know, Deshistoria is a gem. This snug bar has some of the best empanadas and a great selection of beers, all served up in a cozy, intimate space. It’s the perfect pit stop for mouth-watering snacks and a laid-back vibe.
4. El Batey
If dive bars are more your style, you don’t want to miss El Batey. It’s the oldest bar in Old San Juan and has been frequented by the likes of Hunter S. Thompson and the Rolling Stones in the 1960s. You’ll find graffiti and murals all over the walls, business cards hanging from light shades and bartenders that have a generous pour. It’s a welcoming space to shoot pool or just chill, however, you’ll likely be sharing the place with a few other tourists too.

While the origin story might be a bit of a debate (Caribe Hilton also have the same claim), this bar/restaurant has a nice outdoor seating setting. However, it is one of the more touristy venues and we weren’t overly impressed with the food and drinks here.

Make sure you get a spot on the intimate balconies – it’s a great place to watch the the vibrant life of Old San Juan below!
