What is Hobbitenango?

The park is inspired by the famous “Lord Of The Rings” movie sets in New Zealand. It is sprinkled with references to the iconic movies and books, evident in every corner throughout the property. It showcases a deep admiration for the series – a devotion even reflected in the resident cat named “Frodo”.

Hobbitenango was founded by two Guatemalans, with a passion for comics and eco-friendly structures. The plan was to turn the mountain cloud-oasis into a Hobbit style eco-village. And they are making progress!

Hobbitenango Hotel

At present, Hobbitenango also functions as a a small eco-hotel, with three hobbit homes that you can stay in. So, if you do want to experience this unique stay in Guatemala, you will have to book in advance.

The on-site restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so even if you are the only one staying at the property, you can get food (up until 7 pm).

Where is Hobbitenango?

Hobbitenango is in Vuelta Grande, about a 20-minute drive from the center of Antigua Guatemala. You’ll pass some small villages and farms on your way, which makes it a perfect way to feel the disconnect from the bustle of town. The property is high up in the mountains above (and overlooking) the beautiful town of Antigua and the surrounding mountains.

It really is high. With an elevation of 7,800 feet (2,400 m) above sea level, Hobbitenango literally elevates your experience to the clouds. However, this altitude can have an effect on your body if you are not used to it, and it also means that clouds are literally flowing through the property. You should be prepared for all weather conditions up at Hobbitenango as things can change in a matter of minutes (including the views).

How to get to Hobbitenango from Antigua

There are five main ways that you can get to Hobbitenango:

  1. The Hobbitenango shuttle
  2. A taxi
  3. An Uber
  4. Drive yourself
  5. Join an organised tour

Each mode transports you to the designated car park of Hobbitenango, with the last stretch of the rocky, near-vertical road being inaccessible to regular vehicles. From the car park (900 meters from the property), you can choose between a challenging hike or a convenient 4×4 truck available that is included in the entrance fee (we recommend waiting for the truck).

Taking the Hobbitenango Shuttle from Antigua

In Antigua, the shuttle can be boarded from the official office located at 3a Avenida Norte #20A, costing 45Q per person for a round trip. It’s an open-back truck with shade cover, adhering to a regular schedule (approximately every 2 hours) departing from both Antigua and the Hobbitenango car park. You can also organise the shuttle to pick you up from your hotel (3 or more people, Q250, and an additional Q50 each for entrance fee), or from select hostels (Q100 and includes the park ticket). To book, you can contact the Hobbitenango reception via WhatsApp (+502-3090-8812) or visit the office in Antigua to confirm the schedule and availability.

Taxi to Hobbitenango

A local taxi from the center of Antigua will cost you approximately 60-70Q. Note that there are no taxis waiting at the top of the mountain for your return from the car parking lot so you will need to organize either for the taxi to come back and pick you up at a certain time (or take the shuttle back down).

Uber to Hobbitenango

An Uber from the center of Antigua costs around 35-60Q. We opted to do this as we were staying at Hobbitenango, and it was a very quick and easy ride. Most of the Uber drivers in Antigua are familiar with the location.

Drive Yourself

If you prefer the flexibility of driving yourself, the journey ends at the mountain top car park, followed by the 4×4 trip to the property. You can park in any of the Hobbitenango village parking lots for Q20 for the day.

The best way to get to Hobbitenango from Antigua (if you’re more than one person)

Things to do at Hobbitenango

  • Walk around the property: There are lots of interesting things going on around the Hobbitenango property. Things to do in Antigua

There is not much else to see around the Hobbitenango property besides farmland. However while in Antigua, Guatemala there are a couple of highlights to consider:

  • Make your own Jade Jewellery. Xibalba Joyas, is a collection of local artists making ethically sourced jewelry and clothing. They also run a “make your own jade jewelry” lesson.
  • Get a photo under the Santa Catalina Arch. It’s best to get down to the arch street before 8am if you don’t want other people in your shot.
  • Eat vegetarian in town. Samsara is a great vegetarian restaurant with a bit of a kooky feel. Otherwise, Toko Baru does a great falafel pocket (enough for two to share for a good cheap meal), and Caoba farms have some great farm-to-table produce.
  • Check out ethical Guatemalan brands like Hiptipico & Stela 9
  • A great place to stay in town is The Good Hotel (who are a non for profit hotel)

  1. We have stayed overnight at Hobbitenango in 2017 and visited again in 2019. Such a neat place! Hoping to visit again in Summer 2022. The Hobbitenango website now indicates there is an entrance fee for EVERY day of 50Q, instead of fees only on weekends/holidays. Just wanted you to be aware of the change.
