Things to do in Austin
It’s all about the good times in Austin. Whether you’re visiting for one of the many festivals (Austin City Limits, South by South West [SXSW]) or you just want to see what this place is all about, here are some of the things/places to add to your list:
- Walk along or canoe on lady bird lake: This is an area in the middle of town that separates south Austin. Note that swimming in the lake has been deemed illegal due to debris underwater
- Visit the Austin Convention Centre: It hosts a lot of events and conferences and is located in the town surrounded by a lot of great food options.
- Watch a game at the Texas Frank Erwin Centre: This is the Texas Univerity Campus stadium and is home to a variety of sport games
- Walk through the Texas State Capitol building: these impressive grounds are the political epicenter of Texas. Which seems a little out of place in downtown Austin, but offers a great insight into US political history
- Watch live music on 6th Street: this is where the action happens. And it goes all night.
- Take a swim at Barton Springs in Zilker Park: this 358-acre park is basically in Austin city and is a perfect spot to escape the 6th street madness. It is a popular weekend hangout with the locals
- Shop at the thrift stores: Austin is a thrift store heaven, here are some to get you going:
- Room Service,
- Blue Velvet
- New Bohemia.
- Thrift Town on Manchaca,
- Goodwill Blue Hangar
