Quick Tips for Byron Bay
Byron Bay town is relatively small. The main shopping district and food area is a short series of blocks that could be comfortably walked in a few hours.
The majority of Byron Bay’s central area is comprised of suburban-style homes with a laid-back, beachy feel. One of the best things about staying in Byron Bay central is the ability to walk. You can walk to the beach, then to the shops and restaurants, a bar (or two), and back to your VRBO or Airbnb Byron Bay Stay. The neighborhoods are considered safe, and you’ll often see people walking or riding bicycles around the town.
Key Tips for Byron Bay Central
There are a few key things to keep in mind when staying at your VRBO or Airbnb Byron Bay.
Parking
Parking in the Byron Bay shopping district is expensive. All street parking within the shopping area is paid for. Street parking will cost you $5/hour (max $25 per day).
Be sure to check the street parking map when staying at your Airbnb Byron Bay. There are areas of Free Parking on the suburban streets, however, most have time limits of either 2 hours or 4 hours (between 9 am and 6 pm).

In some cases, Airbnb rentals may not have their own parking space. If this is the case, you will need to keep an eye on your car park timing and move if necessary.
Drinking in Public and on the Beach is Not Allowed
Byron Bay has a relaxed vibe and a history of attracting festivals and party-goers. This can result in a feeling that anything goes. But the drinking in public laws have become tighter in the last couple of years, and drinking on beaches is strictly illegal and enforced by the Byron Shire Council.
Beach Walkability
The beach in front of Byron Bay Central is called “Main Beach”. It is a quick and easy walk from most of the VRBO and Airbnb Byron Bay Central stays. However, if you want to make your way to one of the other amazing local beaches, you can walk to:
- Wategos Beach is approximately 3 km away from Byron Bay town center and takes about 40 minutes to walk
- Belongil Beach is approximately 2 km away from the town center and takes 20 minutes to walk
- Clarks Beach is approximately 2 km away from the town center and takes about 20 minutes to walk
