Best area to stay in Barbados

Having lived in Saint James near Holetown, I can personally recommend the West Coast of Barbados as one of the best areas to stay. This stretch, particularly the parishes of Saint James and Saint Peter, have some of the island’s most beautiful beaches. You also have the convenience of being right on the bus line making trips to Holetown and Speightstown super easy (or if you hire a car, its a quick trip between the two spots). Both spots are vibrant with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops.

If you’re looking at hotels, South Gap is a popular spot known for its lively tourist scene. It’s great if you’re after that kind of vibe, but it can feel a bit crowded. For a more authentic stay, the tranquility and stunning natural beauty of the West Coast, offers a great blend of relaxation with stunning beaches and easy access to local amenities.

Best Things to do in Barbados:

Living in Barbados, we had the chance to explore quite a bit! Here’s a guide our favourite things to do in Barbados, perfect for anyone wanting to experience it like a local:

  • Carlisle Bay Snorkeling: Spend a morning of afternoon swimming in the calm crystal waters of Carlisle Bay, where you can snorkel over fascinating shipwrecks and swim with turtles. Just off the beach, near where the catamarans stop, is a hot spot for turtles.
  • Surfing at Freights Bay: Catch some waves at Freights Bay or chill at Cafe Luna on the rooftop of Little Arches Hotel for stunning views and great food.
  • Visit Little Bay: For a bit of adventure, head to Little Bay to watch the dramatic water blowholes. It’s a rugged and spectacular sight.
  • Relax at Cove Bay: Just next to Little Bay, find the palm tree paradise of Cove Bay for some downtime and a picnic.
  • Animal Flower Cave: Although the cave itself might not dazzle, the drive up and the breadfruit tacos make it worthwhile.
  • Harrison’s Cave: A massive tourist spot, but if you’re not a frequent cave visitor, the electric cart tour through these impressive caverns is a must-do.
  • Eco Lifestyle Lodge: For a memorable brunch or lunch over the weekend at Bathsheba, make sure to book ahead. Roundhouse is another great choice in the area. Take a stroll along the headlands for some spectacular view points.
  • Beach Day at Bottom Bay: Admire the palm-fringed cliffs but remember, it’s not the safest for swimming.
  • Pink Beach at The Crane: If there isn’t sargassum on the south coast, head early to the Crane to see this ‘pink’ sand beach in Barbados. Public access can be found via Crane Beach Road. After grab a bite from Dis Ole House, and maybe check out Shark Hole nearby.
  • Shark Hole: A hidden gem that’s perfect when conditions are calm; check for sargassum before going.
  • Snorkeling off Holetown: In front of Surfside Bar, you might see stingrays and tarpons close to shore in the afternoon.
  • Catamaran Cruises: For a luxurious sail, try Silver Moon; for something more standard yet fun, Cool Runnings is a great choice.

    • La Baguette: Known for delicious croissants.
