How To Make Coconut Mylk With Just 2 Ingredients

Plant based milk can be expensive to buy, but it is actually relatively cheap to make. Coconut Mylk can be made with just 2 ingredients that you usually have at home, shredded (or shaved) coconut and water.

Store-bought coconut mylk can contain additives. These extend the products shelf life. When you make it yourself, you can be sure of exactly what goes inside! Coconut milk and Oat Mylk are two easy vegan mylks to make at home.

What Is Coconut Mylk?

Coconut mylk is a sustainable, plant-based alternative to dairy milk. It is extracted from the pulp of mature coconuts.

Why is Milk sometimes spelled Mylk?

It’s a simple way to differentiate between dairy and non dairy products. While there has been several law cases against the use of the word “milk” when referring to non dairy products, there is still no legal obligation to use the alternative word “mylk”. It is a choice.

What is the difference between coconut milk and coconut water?

Coconut water is the transparent liquid found inside young, green coconuts. It has a sweet taste and contains electrolytes and potassium. Coconut milk, however, is extracted from the coconut meat when it is shredded and mixed with water.

Coconut Mylk Recipe

It is really simple to make coconut milk and its a great recipe for your zero waste kitchen. First, prepare two cups of shredded (or shaved) coconut. Unsweetened, and organic works best.

Add the shredded coconut to the blender, with 4 cups of filtered water. Blend it on high speed for approximately 1 minute until the mixture is smooth and combined. Feel free to taste your mixture, and if it isn’t sweet enough, you can add a date to it and blend.

Next, pour the mixture into a nut milk bag over a bowl, and squeeze all the liquid out. Transfer the mixture into a glass jar or a bottle, and keep it sealed in the fridge.

You may get some separation, so make sure you shake the mixture well before use.

What to do with the leftover Coconut Pulp from Coconut Milk?

Don’t throw out the leftover coconut pulp after making your coconut milk. You can use it in recipes, face masks and more. Here are 5 ideas for you:

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Nut milk bag (or cheesecloth)
  • Jar or Bottle

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Shredded Coconut Unsweetened, Organic
  • 4 cups Filtered Water

Instructions

  • Add coconut and water to the blender, and blend on high speed until the mixture looks smooth (Approx 1-2 minutes).
  • Pour mixture into a nutmilk bag over a bowl, and squeeze all the liquid out. Alternatively you can squeeze it through a cheescloth.
  • Give the mixture a quick stir, and pour into a milk jug or jar with a sealed lid.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 4 days. Give it a shake before use.

Notes

If you would like your coconut mylk to be a little sweeter, you can add a date into the mixture.
