Why oat mylk over almond mylk?
There has been a surge in the sales of almond milk in the last decade. While all plant-based mylk options are more environmentally friendly to make than dairy milk, they do come with their own costs.
Almond trees require pollination from honey bees. In the USA around 70% of commercial honey bees are brought to California during the almond pollination time. Unfortunately, due to factors like harmful pesticides, around 30% of the honeybees in 2019’s season were killed.
Oat mylk, is typically grown in cooler climates and avoids the deforestation impact of other mylks, as well as the honeybee impact!
Oat Mylk Recipe
Making homemade Oat Mylk is one of the best zero waste kitchen hacks. You can buy rolled oats in bulk from a zero waste store, use your own reusable jar or jug to contain the milk, and then use the leftover pulp in various dishes. Here’s the recipe:
- Blend the oats: place one cup of rolled, old fashioned oats in a high-speed blender, with 4 cups of filtered water. Blend it on high speed for approximately 30-45 seconds, until the mixture is smooth.
- Strain: Pour the mixture through a strainer, and gently press the liquid through. Don’t try and squeeze the pulp as this will make the mylk slimy. Discard or save the pulp for treats.
- Strain again (optional): Strain the mixture for a second time to make the mylk extra smooth
- Transfer and chill: Pour the oat mylk into a glass jar or bottle and store in the fridge to chill. Give the milk a swirl before use.

Keep the oat mylk pulp leftovers to make treats!
When you make oat milk (and coconut mylk) there is leftover oat pulp. This pulp can be saved to make treats like cookies. Simply scrape the oat pulp into a bowl and keep it in the fridge for later.
How To Make Oat Mylk
Equipment
- Blender
- Strainer
- Jar or Bottle
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Rolled Oats Old fashioned style
- 4 Cups Filtered Water
Instructions
- Add rolled oats and water into the blender, and blend on high speed for approximately 1 minute.
- Pour mixture into a strainer over a bowl, gently move the pulp around to let all the liquid through. Be careful not to press down on the pulp as this can make your oat milk slimy.
- Place the leftover oat pulp into another bowl and rinse the strainer.
- Strain the liquid an additional time.
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar or bottle with a sealed lid.
- Store your oat milk in the fridge for up to 4 days. Give it a shake before use.
