Best Places to Visit in The Caribbean
The Caribbean is home to some of the most beautiful islands in the world. Each one is unique with different landscapes, cultures and attractions. There’s an island for everyone, whether you want a relaxing beachside escape or an adventure filled trip with waterfalls and mountains and more. Some of our favourites islands include:
Grenada
Grenada is the hidden gem of the Caribbean, with luscious jungle waterfalls, spacious beaches, friendly locals, and world-class chocolate. If you are looking somewhere off the beaten path, this is the island for you (or her sister island, Carriacou).
Barbados
Barbados is celebrated for its pristine white sand beaches, vibrant local culture, and a rich historical past. It’s a haven for both adventure and relaxation, offering lively festivals like Crop Over and serene retreats along its sun-drenched coast. Whether you’re diving into the crystal-clear waters or sampling amazing local rum and seafood, Barbados promises a memorable escape from the ordinary, making it a perfect choice for travelers seeking a mix of excitement and leisure.
Jamaica
Reggae vibes, stunning beaches, eco accommodation and amazing waterfalls. After a month driving around Jamaica we’ve populated a list of experiences and attractions that can be found no where else in the world.
The Virgin Islands
If you are looking for amazing snorkeling and marine life, head to St John in the US Virgin Islands. This pristine island has protected approximately 70% of the island as national park. There are plenty of things to do in the Virgin Islands, whether you want to relax on beautiful beaches, swim with turtles, or visit the nearby Baths at Virgin Gorda.
Puerto Rico
This lively island is a melting pot of history, art, food and beautiful beaches. Get lost wandering the colourful streets of Old San Juan or learn to surf at a palm tree lined beach the choice is yours. We’ve found a few hidden gems that will make your Puerto Rico experience something to remember.
Languages spoken in the Caribbean
A multitude of languages reflects the region’s diverse history and cultures. English is widely spoken, serving as the official language in many islands, including Jamaica, Grenada Barbados, Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. However, Spanish predominates in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, while French is the main language in Haiti and the French West Indies. Dutch is spoken in Sint Maarten, the ABC islands. Additionally, various Creole languages, blending European, African, and indigenous influences, are commonly spoken, enriching the region’s cultural tapestry.
Best time to visit the Caribbean
The dry season, from December to April is generally the best time to visit the Caribbean. July to November is generally the wettest period, however you will experience warm weather year round.
Getting around the Caribbean
When we first arrived in the Caribbean, we thought navigating between the islands would be straightforward, but unless you’re cruising, it can be surprisingly challenging. While some island chains like the West Indies offer direct local flights (on a ‘puddle jumper’/small plane), traveling between different Caribbean regions often requires a stopover in hubs like Miami or Trinidad. Sailing is a fantastic way to experience the Caribbean, offering a unique perspective of its beauty, though it’s best undertaken by experienced sailors and ideally scheduled during the drier months to avoid the hurricane season. This method not only provides freedom of movement but also allows for an intimate connection with the stunning Caribbean seascape.
